Summary: The series of conflicts between Maori and Government soldiers over almost 30 years between 1845 and 1872 are known as New Zealand Wars. They produced many heroes, both Pakeha and Maori, including Von Tempsky, Rewi Maniapoto, Governor Grey and Te Kooti. They also produced many stories, of bravery and heroism, and of cruelty and folly. The wars continue to have an impact on the shape of the country today. Suggested level: intermediate, junior secondary
